Running multiple workloads or tasks on shared compute machines involves a difficult balance between ensuring isolation and enabing native performance. Virtual machines have become the common standard for workload isolation in public clouds. Internally at Google we are heavy users of an alternate system for workload isolation: containers, a mechanism for operating system-level virtualization. In this talk we'll first provide an overview of Google's shared clusters and the workloads they run. We'll then introduce containers, how they're used at Google, and present lmctfy, a new open source project based on our existing containers solution.
