StreamCache: Revisiting Page Cache for File Scanning on Fast Storage Devices

As faster and faster storage devices become available, an operating system must strive to efficiently utilize the increased bandwidth when file scanning. Buffered I/O via page cache is often used, as it provides data aggregation, I/O alignment and buffering. However, page cache has some performance issues when employed to handling I/O with fast storage devices.

In my talk I present these issues and describe StreamCache: a new page cache management system, aimed at alleviating these problems.

PageFlex: Flexible and Efficient User-space Delegation of Linux Paging Policies with eBPF

Memory efficiency has become crucial in data center system design as memory's share of total costs rises. To achieve it, mechanisms that transparently page out "cold" data to cheaper media are employed. Most often, default kernel paging policies are used; although research has yielded policies expected to perform better, integrating them into the Linux kernel remains challenging.

In my talk, I will discuss problems with existing userspace-based paging solutions and present PageFlex, a framework for delegating paging policies to userspace with minimal overhead using eBPF.

Zapraszam,
Artur Wojtuszkiewicz
